Être is an auxiliary verb and mostly used to show the existence of something or a state of being. It simply means the verb “to be”. It is also used in the past tense and in other forms when conjugating verbs.

être au présent de l’indicatif

Je suis- I am

Tu es – You are

Il est-He is

Nous sommes- We are

Vous êtes- You are

Ils sont – They are

être is made up of the singular and plural form.

The singular is made up of

Je suis

Tu es

Il.est

The plural form includes:

Nous sommes

Vous êtes

Ils sont

In order to be able to speak, you need to memorise both French and English versions. Then learn few adjectives to add to your knowledge on conjugating être.

An example is
